TUSKS WITH DESIGNS
This
Samoan "ULA NIFO PUA'A"
is handmade by a local Samoan bone artist from Samoan wild boar tusks.
I commissioned this piece specifically for me to wear to my son's wedding a
several years ago and it was only worn for the one occasion. I obtained this
tusk set on Savaii Island and they are perfectly matching tusks. Most often,
tusks from the same boar are not perfectly matching due to their hard life in
the bush. The intricate and fine designs handcarved into the tusk are the traditional
Samoan tatau (tattoo) designs that are still used in the art of tattooing which
are part of the Samoan culture both here in Samoa and in overseas countries.
Each tusk measures 6-1/4" long.

and fine Koro design handcarved into the tusk. It has a
3/8" piece of carved bone at the end of one cord which fits thru a loop
at the end of the other cord which forms the old-style closure for the necklace.
The cord is twisted waxed natural flax cord from New Zealand.
The tusk measures 7-1/4" long.
