TRADITIONAL Authentic-Scale SAMOAN Outrigger Canoe or PAOPAO in the Samoan language which comes from the Island of UPOLU in Samoa (Western). This type of Outrigger Canoe is still very much in use for fishing today and the hull is still handcarved from a single log. This model is also completely handcarved from local hardwood and VERY SKILLFULLY CARVED to scale. No nails are used and even the traditional lashing is tiny handmade 3-strand coir sennet which is handbraided mature coconut husk fiber. This is an amazing little canoe and so detailed, even the separate paddle is to scale. PAOPAO description: "A small outrigger canoe, built of a hollowed log, used to fishing in the lagoon. The hold (liu) is hollowed out (fu'e fua) with adzes. The canoe has two outrigger booms (iato) tied to the float (ama) with connection pegs (tu'itu'i). The float is made of fau or moso'oi wood."
Measures approximately 12" to 13" long x 6" wide x 2" high and the paddle is approximately 7-1/2" long.

24" TRADITIONAL Authentic-Scale SAMOAN Outrigger Canoe called an IA TOLIMA in the Samoan language. The IA TOLIMA was the only dugout outrigger canoe that carried a sail which was made from siapo (tapa barkcloth) or woven pandanus mat. This Ia Tolima is completely handcarved from the local ironwood tree (IFILELE tree). VERY SKILLFULLY CARVED to scale. No nails and even the traditional lashing is tiny handmade 3-strand coir sennet (natural coconut fiber). The sail is made from stripped coconut tree bark and is detachable. This is an amazing Outrigger Canoe and so detailed, even the separate paddle is to scale.
Description: "The hold (liu) is hollowed out (fu'e fua) with adzes. The canoe has two to five outrigger booms (iato) tied to the float (ama) with connection pegs (tu'itu'i). There was a banancing spar (suati) opposite the booms. The float is made of fau or moso'oi wood." Measures 24" long x 9-1/2" wide x 2" high, the sail is 10-1/2", paddle is 10-1/2" long.

24" TRADITIONAL Authentic-Scale SAMOAN Outrigger Fishing Canoe with Fishing Rod called a VA'AALO in the Samoan language or Bonito Canoe. It has 2 separate paddles and an authentic fishing rod. The fishing rod is a bamboo pole set into carved hardwood 'handle which is then lashed with tiny braided sennet (coconut fiber). The fishing line is also tiny, fine sennet with an authentic bonito lure (pa atu) on the end which is made of real carved pearl shell with a carved hook (made of turtle shell in olden times) lashed to it and a sennet swatch 'tail'. This Va'aalo is completely handcarved from the local ironwood tree (Ifilele tree). very skillfully carved to scale. No nails and even the traditional lashing is tiny handmade 3-strand coir sennet (natural coconut fiber). This is an amazing Outrigger Fishing Canoe with a beautiful Fishing Rod with authentic Bonito Lure, and so detailed, even the 2 separate paddles are to scale.
Description: "This boat is used for fishing for bonito (tuna) outside the reef. It is half decked, the smaller va'aalo being built of one log like a paopao. Running the full length of the half deck, fore and aft, was a row of white pule shells. Over the iato is attached a forked stick as a rest for the rod when not in use (to'omaga). Behind the steering seat (nofoaga) there is a rest for the rod, used when the boat is in action. In front of the seat is the pu'ega, a hand-hold for the steersman when he swings the rod. The hold (liu) is hollowed out (fu'e fua) with adzes. The canoe has two to five outrigger booms (iato) tied to the float (ama) with connection pegs (tu'itu'i). There was a balancing spar (suati) opposite the booms. The float is made of fau or moso'oi wood."
