TRADITIONAL
Authentic-Scale SAMOAN Outrigger Canoe or PAOPAO in the Samoan language
which comes from the Island of UPOLU in Samoa (Western). This type of Outrigger
Canoe is still very much in use for fishing today and the hull is still handcarved
from a single log. This model is also completely handcarved from local hardwood
and VERY SKILLFULLY CARVED to scale. No nails are used and even the traditional
lashing is tiny handmade 3-strand coir sennet which is handbraided mature coconut
husk fiber. This is an amazing little canoe and so detailed, even the separate
paddle is to scale. PAOPAO description: "A small outrigger canoe, built of a
hollowed log, used to fishing in the lagoon. The hold (liu) is hollowed out
(fu'e fua) with adzes. The canoe has two outrigger booms (iato) tied to the
float (ama) with connection pegs (tu'itu'i). The float is made of fau or moso'oi
wood." THIS CANOE measures 8" long - to see other larger model canoes click
