This is an authentic Traditional Samoan Outrigger Canoe Paddle (FOE in the Samoan Language). It is a traditional outrigger paddle in that the front of the blade is different from the back of the blade with a pointed ridge going about a third of the way up the blade. The Outrigger Canoe (Paopao) is still very much in daily use today in Samoa for fishing inside the reef and these paddles were made to be used. There is 18" of carved traditional design around the middle section of the handle. It is made from hard durible local Ifilele hardwood and shaded black from being soaked in mangrove mud. It measures approximately 72" and the blades measure 26" long and 8" wide.
