These are traditional handcarved Samoan Slit Drums called PATE or, when they are very larger, LALI, in the Samoan language and are played with one or two sticks which are sometimes custom-made for the user. They are made from one block of the Samoan Ironwood called Ifilele and can be VERY heavy in weight depending on the length and girth so costly to ship the larger drums. The more traditional ones are carved in a slight boat shape, and have a hollowed out central resonating cavity. These have beautifully carved traditional design on both sides. A feature of traditional Polynesian Slit Drums generally is the presence at each end of a small cavity paralleling the depth and width of the central slit and these 'ears' are said to improve the drum's sound. Drum 1 and 2 can be ordered in any length/girth.
