These are graceful, handcarved wooden traditional headrests called an 'ALUGA or ALI in the Samoan language. In olden times, Headrests were used while sleeping only in the 3 South Pacific island countries of Samoa, Tonga and Fiji. They are made from local IFILELE hardwood trees and are therefore heavy in weight.
The following was written in a mid-1800's publication by Edward Dodd: "Since the head was the most sacred part of the body, the residence of the man's mana, it was desirable that the head's support be appropriately individual and well-designed. Headrests are most common in western Polynesia". Hea
drests were important personal possessions and it was deemed an insult to touch one without the owner's permission.
These Ali are handcarved from local IFILELE hardwood and all measure about 14" long, 5" high in the middle and 4" wide.
