These works of art were
DONE BY SKILLFUL, TRADITIONAL SENIOR WOODCARVERS from the Village of Uafato
in the remote Fagaloa Bay Area of Upolu Island in Western Samoa. This is the
area of Samoa, in 8 villages, where all the hereditary traditional woodcarving
families have lived for centuries since olden times and they are the families
who always carved for the Samoan royal families. These are very finely done
pieces at a reasonable price.
ALL OF THESE BOWLS ARE IN STOCK AND ON SALE
(unless marked 'sold').
These graceful Traditional Samoan Bowls were handcarved from one piece
of dense hardwood (IFILELE tree wood) so are heavy in weight. The carved designs
are very detailed. Many have the traditional, dark luster patina from burying
it in mud for a considerable time before the design is carved and then polishing
it with a pig's tooth. They have a lovely grain to the wood on the inside
of the bowl.
