This is a Unique Handcarved
Hardwood Bent-Leg Kava Tanoa/Bowl made from one piece of very dense
local hardwood (IFILELE tree wood) so is heavy in weight. Large pieces of
this Ifilele wood are becoming increasingly hard to get as the trees are very
slow growing.. The legs are the unique bent leg type which is more difficult
to carve.The larger diameter tanoas in this style have 2 or 4 carved handles
which are wrapped with handbraided 3-strand traditional sennet which is the
pounded fiber of the coconut husk and the smaller diameter tanoas do not have
handles. It has the traditional, dark luster patina from burying it in mud
for a considerable time and then polishing it with a pig's tooth.The carved
designs around the top rim and sides are very wide and detailed. It has a
lovely grain to the wood on the inside of the bowl.
Prices: The tanoa in the first 5 photos measured 18" in top
diameter and would be $200.00 (plus shipping).
The tanoa in the second 5 photos measured 12" in top diameter and would
be $100.00 (plus shipping)
Another size is 15" in top diameter and would be $150.00 (plus shipping).
