This graceful Traditional,
Deep-Sided, Multi-legged Kava Tanoa/Bowl was handcarved from one piece
of very dense hardwood (IFILELE tree wood) so is quite heavy. Large pieces
of this quality of wood are becoming increasingly hard to get as the trees
are very slow growing. It has the traditional straight sides and deep bowl.
This type of many-legged kava tanoa is unique to the Country of Samoa and
is much harder and more time-consuming to produce. There are skillfully handcarved
traditional design patterns on the top lip and around the sides. It has a
lovely grain to the wood on the inside of the bowl and has the dark luster
patina from being buryed it in mud for a considerable time before the design
was carved into it after which it was polished with a pig's tooth.
