This RARE, sleek and deadly weapon is
an elegant and VERY finely carved/finished/detailed TRADITIONAL SAMOAN
THROWING SPEAR called a TALA-O-LE-LO (in the Samoan language). In Olden
Times, Throwing Spears were major Samoan fighting weapons, and ranged in length
from 4 feet to over 10 feet. In Old Samoa, these spears were made by specialist
craftsmen and always in the densest of hardwood. There is now only one senior
carver in Samoa who still makes these traditional weapons so therefore it
is rare. This throwing spear is made from the now-very rare hardwood BAU WOOD
which is presently only surviving in a small area on the west end of Savaii
Island. It is a very hard, heavy and smooth-finished wood which has a beautiful
reddish color to it especially when oiled traditionally with coconut oil as
this spear is. The red color to the wood is very distictive and what make
Bau wood very easy to recognize. Bau wood is the hardest and heaviest in weight
of the Samoan hardwoods. In the Olden Times of Samoa, BAU was the wood that
was reserved for the weapons of the Royal Family and very highest Chiefs.
It is beautifully carved with the old traditionally intricate Samoan designs on
the full top handle part. The barbs (protrusions) are very detailed and the
spear is the most difficult to carve of any Samoan woodcarving.
Prices: The spear below was
60"long and would be $160.00 plus shipping.
